THE ULTIMATE
So week one of the genius hour project has come and past, and I also had my first lesson on the piano. It was much harder than I had originally participated. I am not going to lie, my hand started to cramp up really fast. My mom went really easy on me, and taught me the basics since it was lesson one. Even though the first lesson was pretty straight forward, it will continue to get more and more difficult.
When I began my first lesson, the first thing my mom harped on was posture, she talked about how important it was while you were playing. If you do not use proper posture, it could lead to piano based injuries (which I actually found kind of funny). I struggled with this and continued to find myself arching my back and finding a comfortable position to play. I learned a basic riff after getting a quick rundown on what a piano really is, and practice that riff until I knew it like it was the back of my hand. It did not take long to do, but it did take my parents listening to me mess up badly more than they wanted to. My next lesson will be on tuesday and I am really looking forward to it. I am sure it will be much more interesting than my first day (first days in any activity always seem to be so boring). I hope to have a video of me playing a riff in the next blog so you all can see what I am up to. It looks like that is it for this week, come back next week to see where my next lesson takes me.

Hello everyone and welcome to my genius hour site! Over the next 12 weeks, you will be following me along on this crazy journey of trying to learn the piano. Why the piano? Well, a couple years ago me and a couple other guys spent a saturday moving an old piano from my grandmas house to my house. To anyone who has never moved a piano up a flight of stairs before, it is not fun. Ever since that day the piano has just sat in my house waiting for someone other than my mom to occasionally play it. So here is my opportunity to do just that.
Learning the piano isn't just some walk in the park. It is going to take a lot of time and practice to accomplish what I am trying to do in a 12 week period. It is doable, but I am definitely going to have my work cut out for me. My mother will be the one teaching me the ways of the piano. She took piano lessons for many years growing up so she knows what she is talking about. We plan to practice at least two times a week after school if not more. I have baseball everyday after school, so balancing this with my baseball schedule and my schoolwork will be tricky. I hope as I progress into this project that you will continue to come back to my site weekly to see new posts and read up on my latest encounters with this new instrument. It should be fun to see the transformation from day one to the end. This coming week I plan to officially start my practice. I will be including some pictures of the piano next week as well. See you next week and wish me luck! |
AuthorMy name is Hite Merrifield. Over the next 12 weeks, I will be learning how to play various songs on the piano with no prior knowledge of how to do so. ArchivesCategories |
